Blogging from Brookside in Kansas City: December Challenge - Our Christmas Memories Book

December Challenge - Our Christmas Memories Book

So this year is the first year my husband and I put up the tree and decor with no kids older daughter moved to Birmingham UK with her new husband a few months ago and the younger daughter is in Springfield MO.  We got the job done--and along the way, decided to get rid of some older ornaments and decor no longer needed...we know the kids don't want our old stuff!

But one thing we will never toss is our Christmas Memories book.  I ordered this from Land's End when our first child was 2.  This was way before camera phones and computers.  Every year I would write in a few memories and add a photo of the family.  This first book was started in  1996 and went through 2016..then we started a second one.

Sometimes the girls would scribble in a few sentences but usually it was Mom (of course) that kept up the tradition.  I added the girls' written lists for Santa (sample requests:  "clicky clack shoes" "Barbies" "Princess clothes" ) and special meals we shared, who came to visit, funny moments that happened over the holidays, movies we saw, important events that happened during the year.. Every Christmas season, the kids will take a few minutes to read through the entries and laugh over how we've all aged the past 20 years.

When each of my kids were born, I had NO time to make a traditional baby book.  I was too frazzelled -- and just not that crafty.  But starting this Christmas Memories book is the best thing I ever did to preserve special family moments.  Having pictures and videos on line is fine..but there is something unique about physically taking this book out of storage every year and looking through it.  While we are starting to downsize, and know that our kids don't want our old 'stuff' --- I do know they will treasure this book long after we're gone.

Dear Mary,

Very neat tradition. Never saw the book offered by Land's End.

This is awesome, my granddaughter has a school project for Christmas and it's to do a Christmas family book and she needed pictures for her book, so I printed out the last few Christmas photos I had on my phone for her.  I had 99 pictures from the last 3 Christmas's and I know this will be a great memory book for her as well.  In fact, my daughter stated she was going to make small memory books for each of her children as a keepsake for them.  I'm lookin forward to start a memory book myself.

I'm sure your children will treasure the Memory Book. One thing I enjoy about Christmas is pulling the decorations down and remembering where some of the special ornaments came from. It's a walk down memory lane! I'm sure your children will feel that way about the memory book.

The Memory Book is a wonderful way of sharing history with the family Mary Hutchison, SRES, ABR . Each year when my wife Vanessa buys an ornament, she DATES it with fingernail polish.  Then every ornament has a memory.  She also photos them.  We have so much that our living room has TWO trees, a six and a half and six footer.

Good morning Mary - those are treasured memories.  We do have baby books and this is one thing that our kids will always want.

What a great idea! I would have liked to have done something like that, but it's too late now! Maybe when our boys start having grandchildren, that would be a nice idea for a gift.

Mary- what a wonderful idea and tradition you have. You're right, digital photos are easy and convenient but there's something nice about sitting down with a book of memories.

What a wonderful idea. Christmas is very special at our house - can't imagine why we never had a book like this one. :( A missed opportunity for sure. I'm guessing your daughters will always be grateful you did this.

You are one smart woman to capitalize on an idea and make it your own creation. What a super sweet thing to do for future generations and your own children.

I wonder how much longer you will continue to put up trees? LOL.

That's a beautiful idea. A book like that would be a perfect gift for new parents - or even for newlyweds.

My memory lane comes from the ornaments. We add something new each year that has some significance for that year. Our trees would not pass a designer's approval, but they mean a lot to me.

How wonderful! What a fabulous family tradition!

I did the baby book thing for each of my three children. I enjoy looking through those now and then and when they visit they sometimes ask to look at them. It's things like this that are so valuable!

Good afternoon Mary Hutchison, SRES, ABR ,

I'm so glad that Kathy Streib featured your post in her "Ah-ha" moments for the week. What a wonderful idea and one that would be so fun to look back and read. I love it!

That is SUCH a great idea to preserve memories Mary! It is overwhelming at times to scrapbook all of life but a holiday each year is doable!

Beautiful and touching. This could be presented to the family for Christmas. Such a "home" book would add to my wonderful books collection (from this list )
