A Transaction I Loved

With most transactions, there is usually something I love about it...because I love doing this job! Every so often, I'll have a situation where I voluntarily take on some extra work that I know will benefit the client. Usually it's the seller.  If my sellers are in a difficult emotional situation, or compromised financially, I will do a few extra things for them that I think will help sell the property at my own expense.  I'm sure many agents do the same.

I listed a house last year for a couple that had four children--the wife had just had baby #4, and of course the house that was the ideal fit for them came on the market 3 days after she gave birth!  So they bought it, moved in, and then I put their house on the market.  Her husband travels often, all the kids are under the age of 6 and she was managing on her own during maternity leave. The home situation just got more complicated when she went back to work.

The house they were selling was one of my favorite homes in Brookside, where I live.  I am good friends with the previous owner, and we had spent many evenings on that beautiful wrap around porch, having dinner, talking and laughing, waving at the folks passing by.  So after the family of six moved out, even though Mrs Seller cleaned the house--the large Thermador stove needed a good scrubbing.  So I hired someone to do that, along with washing the windows.  I told my sellers I was taking care of these items and--wow, did they appreciate it!  They must have thanked me three or four times.  Then, as we went forward and got the house listed, they continued to thank me every time I sent them a market update, and when I had my husband come over and repair the running toilet, and every time I had an open house or picked up their mail and brought it to their new home.  Of course, doing these extra things were overall just small tasks for me, but they meant so much to this couple who had their hands  full with jobs and kids and an infant...

Usually at the end of the transaction, my clients will thank me for my work and services. But getting the constant 'thank you' and 'we really appreciate what you are doing' from this family made me love this transaction even more.  It taught me that spending a few extra bucks to help out my clients is totally worth it--even if they don't thank me as much as this couple did.  I feel it's the way I want to do business.
