Is This A Safe Area?

How many times have you been asked that question as a Realtor? And how do you answer?

Especially with out of town buyers, this can be a tricky question. Our buyers should know we want to provide them with all of the information they ask about. But how do you describe 'safe'? I don't think any area is truly invincible from crime, although it's true some are safer than others. We've all heard the stories about a burglary gone bad in an upscale, expensive part of town, as well as the innocent drive by shooting victims in the blighted areas.

So when I'm asked that question, I put it right back to the customer: "tell me what you mean by safe". I always direct them to the very useful crimereports.com website, but not all police departments report stats to the site. I tell them that many police departments will send an officer to your home, recommending changes to make your home safer from break-ins. I encourage them to talk to neighbors, asking about the percieved safety of the area. And I emphasize that it's better to do what you can to prevent a crime from happening, rather than reacting when it's too late.
